Avatars In Facebook…

… or any other networking site for that matter!

I was just wondering about why some people put images not directly related to themselves as their avatars. Is it out of fear to be recognised or a fear that their image would be digitally manipulated and used without permission in the World Wide Web?

Or are they just shy and don’t think much about how they look? Insecure maybe?

Then why, may I ask, join these sites? Forums, networking sites and blogs are about making yourself heard, about participation and about making networks. Not about being silent readers, covert information gatherers or (god forbid) stalkers & voyeurs.

I believe there should be some sort of faith in the system for online communities to thrive. Freedom of expression is good but it should have a bit of reality in there somewhere. Else it’ll be misleading and confusing don’t you think?
