Gloomy Days In Japan

It’s still winter here in Japan and the surrounding environment is grey and dull. From Kansai to Nagoya the temperature is moderately cold; about 6 degrees all round. It actually snowed in Tokyo! I don’t know about others but the cold doesn’t really bother me much. It’s the drab exterior which brings me down, keeps me confined and doesn’t do much to my enthusiasm. Ever heard of ‘winter depression’?
So, without sounding depressing I offer you some images from my surroundings yesterday…
Today is a much, much better day! It’s clear & bright, albeit still chilly. Boarding the train again soon…

Skywalker Ranch By Philip Bloom On ExposureRoom

This is an excellent example of how one can capture captivating and artistic video with a DSLR. Using the multitude of precision lenses available in a DSLR system you can actually get very unique shots on digital film. The final composition is of course dependant on the ‘directors’ creativity and that will set apart one film from another.

Ken Block’s Gymkhana Two Project

This video is a promotional infomercial.

It stars Ken Block, the drift maestro.

It is presented by DC Shoes and exploits 566 whp/611 torque via the 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX STI.

YOU WILL BE AWESTRUCK.

What I find fascinating about this video is how it was choreographed. We’ve all seen drifting before but the cinematography here made all the difference for this short movie. The art direction is way cool. The timed slo-mo cuts intertwined by the fast action grips you. And all the near misses with some unbelievable stunts made it all the sweeter.

This movie is available in High Definition is you’re interested. Head on to YouTube for it. And finally I have to thank my friend Andrea P. for showing me this on the big screen. Bella!

Sony Brings 3D Home in 2010

Well, we all knew it was coming. You can just see the proliferation of 3D movies being shown in cinemas these days. I’ve been told the technology is getting better and more realistic. Plus the glasses (also called goggles) are more high end now. I have experience handling those VR glasses in our studio and they are really, really expensive! Battery powered with active sensors interact with the 3D images in real time.

Looks like 2010 will be the beginning of the Star Wars era!

1Malaysia And Proton

1Malaysia :: Proton

Now here’s an interesting site (and I’m not just saying that because I work for Proton).  Called ‘3 Malaysians’ it’s basically Proton’s micro site in celebration of Malaysia’s 52nd Merdeka (independence day). A collection of 7 short films at 60 seconds each, they star the venerable Afdlin Shauki, the incomparable David Aramugam and the one and only Ho Yuhang.

The web presentation is pretty cool as are the films art direction. One can’t help but notice the similarities to Yasmin Ahmad’s cinematography cues being creatively executed here. I’m not complaining; they are entertaining and fresh. And coming from Proton this certainly is a step forward in illustrating creativity.

Have a look, I’m sure you’ll be entertained.

Nikon D300S Has Arrived

Nikon D300S.

Goodness, it has arrived!

This is indeed an interesting prospect. Not a major overhaul of the original D300 (the design is almost identical to the original) but more of technical improvements. Especially the D-movie function. Most DSLR enthusiasts might snub this feature but I’m personally interested in what in can bring to my creative vision. If you think about it the prospects can be enlightening. Imagine the cool shots you can film with the myriad of lenses available…

Would I buy one now? As much as it is enticing I would actually pass. The upcoming D400 sounds more interesting, especially if the technological jump is greater than this. For that we have to wait a while longer!
